It is no secret that Hyundai is working on an all-new compact MPV, which will be positioned against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Mahindra Marazzo. A new media report suggests that the new compact MPV could be called the Hyundai Staria. Hyundai has trademarked “Staria Premium” and “Staria” names in Philippines on September 15 and June 1 respectively.
According to the trademark, the Staria nameplate falls under “Automobiles, vans, wagons, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles”. Few reports suggest that the Staria could be the name of the next-gen Starex for the South Asian markets. ‘
The upcoming Hyundai compact MPV is expected to be positioned as a slightly premium alternative to the Ertia MPV in terms of pricing. It was reported that Hyundai could use the Venue’s platform for the new MPV; however, we believe that the new Creta’s platform will be more suitable for the 7-seater MPV.
The new Creta’s platform is compatible to accommodate 7-seater SUVs or MPVs along with different engine options. In fact, Hyundai has started testing the 7-seater Creta in South Korea. It is likely to be offered with 2 engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel. While the former is good for 113bhp and 145Nm, the oil burner produces 113bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.
The new MPV will also be produced at Hyundai Indonesia factory and will be exported to select markets including Philippines. Interestingly, the Staria name is also registered in countries such as Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia.
The Korean automaker will introduce the new 7-seater Creta, rumoured to be called the Hyundai Alcazar in the H2, 2021. Adding to it, the company is also readying a micro SUV, codenamed AX, for the Indian market. This model will be based on the new Santro’s platform and will take on the likes of the Tata HBX and the Maruti Ignis.
