With an aim to expand its battery electric vehicle (BEV) product portfolio, Hyundai will make an investment of Rs 4,000 crore in India. The carmaker has already revealed its plan to launch 6 new BEVs in different body styles including SUV. While the company recently introduced the Ioniq 5 electric crossover, its next EV is expected to be the Creta electric SUV. Codenamed SU2i EV, the Hyundai Creta electric has been spotted testing for the first time in the country.

The test mule was semi-camouflaged painted in Grey shade. One can notice the floor pan extension and different body panel colours. Most of its design and styling elements look similar to the regular model. The new Hyundai Creta electric might be designed on the modified version of the existing platform.

As of now, there is no information on its battery pack and range. Rumour has it that the Creta EV might source its powertrain from the Kona EV. The latter comes with a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering power worth 136bhp and 395Nm. It has a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery and promises an ARAI-rated range of 452km.

The Hyundai Creta electric is currently in its initial testing phase and is expected to debut at the 2025 Auto Expo. It might enter into series production by the end of 2024. When launched, the Creta EV will take directly on the upcoming Maruti Suzuki YY8 EV. It will also compete against the Mahindra and Tata’s upcoming mid-size SUVs. Hyundai targets to retail 20,000 – 25,000 units of the electric Creta on annual basis.

As far as pricing is concerned, the Hyundai Creta EV might cost between Rs 15 lakh for the entry-level variant – Rs 30 lakh for the fully-packed variant. The South Korean automaker is likely to use its Chennai-based plant for its production. Hyundai is planning to expand its manufacturing capacity up to 8.5 lakh units with an investment of Rs 1,472 crore in FY2022.
