Hyundai Bayon SUV Gets Kona-Like Sporty Front Design: Teased

We informed you earlier that Hyundai is readying an all-new compact SUV, which will replace the i20 Active in some markets. To be sold in Europe, the Hyundai Bayon is scheduled to be unveiled in the next couple of months. It will measure around 4 meters in length and will be positioned below the Kona. The Bayon will be launched in markets where Venue is not marketed.

Hyundai has now released couple of teasers, which partially reveals the front design of the Bayon. The teaser confirms that the new entry-level SUV will feature the brand’s “Sensuous Sportiness” design language. The SUV will share the funky design of the Kona, featuring similar split headlamp setup.

The Hyundai Bayon features a significantly large front grille, which is complemented by an upper horizontal slat between the LED daytime running lamps. The rear profile will have completely different design, featuring new tail-lamps with an LED signature designed to look like an arrow. It is expected that the Bayon will have a light bar at the rear end, which will connect the two tail-lights.

The upcoming Hyundai Bayon will be based on the new-gen i20 hatchback platform. In the European markets, the small SUV will be positioned against the Ford EcoSport and the Volkswagen T-Cross. It is expected to share the engine options with the new-gen i20 hatchback. The Bayon could be offered with two engine options – a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol. While the former offers two states of tunes – 100bhp/172Nm and 120bhp/172Nm, the 1.2L engine is good for 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 5-speed manual with 1.2L engine, a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed DCT with 1.0L engine.

Hyundai could also introduce the N performance variant in the future. The Bayon N model is likely to be positioned against the Ford Puma ST and the upcoming Toyota Yaris Cross GR. It is expected to feature a 204bhp, 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The Hyundai Bayon won’t be introduced in India. The company is readying an all-new entry-level SUV, which has been caught testing multiple times in Korea. Codenamed Hyundai AX, the small SUV will rival the Maruti Suzuki Ignis/S-Presso and the soon-to-be-launched Tata HBX. It will be based on the Santro’s platform and is likely to feature the 67bhp, 1.1-litre petrol engine.
