Hyundai Bayon To Replace i20 Active In Some Markets

Korean automaker, Hyundai will introduce an all-new compact crossover, called the Hyundai Bayon in the European markets. The new model is scheduled to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2021. The new model will measure around 4 meters in length and will be positioned below the Kona.

Hyundai is already selling the Venue compact SUV as an entry-level SUV in Asia and the United States. The Hyundai Bayon will go on sale in markets where Venue is not marketed. The new model will be based on the new-gen i20 hatchback platform. Going by the spy images, it is visible that the new model will have resemblance with the new i20 hatch. In fact, the new Bayon will come as a replacement for the i20 Active in select markets.

In the European markets, the new Hyundai Bayon compact crossover will challenge the Ford EcoSport and the Volkswagen T-Cross. These two European crossovers measures around 4.10 meters in length. The spy images reveal that the upcoming crossover will have Hyundai’s new design language. Some of the design highlights will include cascading front grille, LED signature headlamps and boomerang-shaped LED tail-lamps. The crossover will have a very wide red line on the trunk lid.

The Bayon compact crossover is expected to share the engine options with the new-gen i20 hatchback. It is likely to be offered in two engine options – a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol. While the former offers two states of tunes – 100bhp/172Nm and 120bhp/172Nm, the 1.2L engine is good for 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 5-speed manual with 1.2L engine, a 6-speed MT and a 7-speed DCT with 1.0L engine.
