Hyundai AX1 Micro SUV Production To Begin In September

Korean automaker, Hyundai is preparing a new micro SUV, codenamed AX1, which has been spotted testing numerous times in Korea and even in Europe. The new model will first go on sale in South Korea in the end of 2021, while India launch expected in early 2021. According to the Korean media, the Hyundai AX1 production will begin from September 2021.

The Hyundai AX1 mini SUV will be rolled out from GGM’s production line in September 2021. The plant is an outcome of a joint venture between the Gwangju local government and Hyundai Motor Company. A total of 575.4 billion Won ($519 million) will be invested in GGM over the next three years.

The plant is capable of producing 70,000 mini SUVs annually. The trial production of the micro SUV has already been commenced. The company will produce the petrol version of the micro SUV at this plant. If reports are to be believed, the Hyundai AX1 based electric city car is also under development. The production of the electric micro SUV is reportedly to commence in 2023.

The new Hyundai AX1 electric will use BorgWarner integrated drive module (iDM), which comprises of an electric motor, a gearbox and power electronics in a modular unit. Hyundai has reportedly opted for the ‘iDM146’ unit, which operates at 400 volts and has a peak power of 135kW or 184PS.

Hyundai has already teased the AX1 micro SUV in South Korea, which reveals round-shaped headlamps with O-ring LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps). Below the clamshell bonnet structure, the SUV houses thin LED strips which will also work as turn indicators. The design of the AX1 will be inspired by the Venue compact SUV. It features compact and boxy design with tall pillars, squared wheel arches with black plastic cladding and rectangular wing mirrors.

The Hyundai AX1 micro SUV is reportedly to be based on the new K1 platform that underpins the Grand i10 Nios. The India-spec model is likely to be powered by a 1.1-litre engine producing 68bhp and 96Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and an AMT. The company could also add 82bhp, 1.2L petrol engine, which powers the Grand i10 Nios.
