Hyundai AX Mini SUV Spotted For The First Time

We have reported earlier that Hyundai Motor Company is working on a low-cost electric small SUV that will be developed under its ‘Smart EV’ project. The new Hyundai electric mini SUV (codenamed – Hyundai AX) is likely to have 90 per cent localization and is expected to cost below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). While its India launch will happen by mid 2023, we got to see its first camouflaged prototype captured in camera in South Korea.

The spy pictures reveal that the new Hyundai electric mini SUV will feature a triangular mesh grille and two-tier headlamps as we have seen in the Venue. It carries newly-designed alloy wheels with large wheels. Design elements such as flat side structures, curved front window frame on the trailing edge, tight overhangs, hidden rear door handles and steeply sloping rear windshield give it futuristic look.

You can also notice large second lamps integrated on the bumper. Its dimensions would be roughly similar to the Santro hatchback, but it will sit slightly higher.  Interior of the upcoming Hyundai AX is still a mystery to us. Though, the fresh spy images confirm that the mini SUV will get features such as rear parking sensors, adjustable headrests and pole antenna. It would be quite early to comment on its engine specifications. Though, the low-cost Hyundai electric SUV is likely to come with a 1.0L, 3-cylinder engine. Its power and torque figures are unknown to us. The carmaker might also offer the Santro’s 1.1L, 4-cylinder engine that pushes out a maximum power of 67bhp and a peak torque of 100Nm. Transmission choices might include 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox option.

The Hyundai AX mini SUV might make its debut in its concept form at the 2022 Auto Expo. In Hyundai India’s product portfolio, the AX based mini SUV will be positioned below the Venue subcompact SUV. Initially, the carmaker will produce around 70,000 units of the electric micro SUV on annual basis.

More details about the upcoming Hyundai electric mini SUV are likely to be revealed in near future. Stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
