The upcoming Honda HR-V SUV will be powered by a 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine.

Honda had launched the HR-V compact SUV in international markets in 2015. The SUV is available in petrol and hybrid versions only, and was not meant to be a diesel driven. However, the Japanese brand is now planning to add a new turbo petrol and a diesel engine in the HR-V lineup. The current model is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that produces 130PS of power and 155Nm of torque.

Coming back to diesel HR-V, the 5-seater premium SUV will gain a new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. This is the same engine that powers the new CR-V and the Civic sedan. The turbocharged diesel engine is capable of producing 118bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Since HR-V will receive diesel engine, probability of launching this SUV in India gets higher. In fact, Honda officials have hinted several times that they are considering this SUV for Indian market. This SUV is based on the Jazz platform that also underpins the City, so localisation won’t be a big hurdle. Adding to it, Honda has already started local development of the 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine in India. This will further help the Japanese automaker to achieve good pricing. Honda is yet to make an official announcement on the launch of HR-V in India, though a possible launch in the end of 2019 can’t be ignored. Japanese automaker has recently announced to launch 4 new models in India by 2020. The next model to arrive is the new Civic sedan, which will be followed by a compact SUV and a new-gen City sedan.
