Honda Electric Scooter Testing Begin Soon; Launch By 2023

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) aims to foray into the EV (electric vehicle) segment in the next fiscal year. According to a PTI report, Atsushi Ogata, President, Managing Director and CEO at HMSI, has revealed that the company will begin feasibility test of its upcoming electric scooter with its dealerships by the end of 2021 festive season. The model will be launched in the next financial year. He also revealed that the company is also plans to tap opportunities in the battery management systems as the EV segment growing with the subsidiaries offered by the government and increasing petrol and diesel prices.

 The Japanese two-wheeler maker has no plans to bring in electric iterations of its popular bikes (Shine) and scooters (Activa) over the next three years. Just so you know, Honda showcased the PCX electric scooter at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The model was previewed to select dealers at a private event in 2020 and its patent registered in India in May 2021. If it’s launched in India, the Honda PCX will take on the Bajaj eChetak, TVS iQube, Simple One, Okinawa and the newly-launched Ola electric scooters.

Powertrain system of the electric scooter includes a removable lithium-ion battery called ‘Honda Mobile Power Pack’. The battery packs can be fully charged either via the conventional cable charger in 6 hours or separately in 4 hours. The Honda PCX electric scooter will deliver a range of 41km. Globally, the model has been sold with a 4.2kW (5.6bhp) motor that offers a top speed of 67kmph. The urban e-scooter measures 1923mm in length, 745mm in width and 1170mm in height.

The Honda PCX electric scooter carries a large front apron with twin integrated headlamps and a windscreen. The side panels are running towards the rear section as we have seen in the conventional maxi scooters. Its other key highlights include a long wheelbase, alloy wheels, a wide flootboard split by a central spin, front disc brake with ABS and rear drum brake and a telescopic fork upfront and twin hydraulic shock absorbers suspension units at the rear.
