Ford Working On Two New Compact SUVs; New Report

Ford Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra have finally ended their proposed joint venture. Adding to it, Ford has also stopped working on new projects which were planned under the new joint venture. This is confirmed by Ford India spokesman – “As part of winding down our relationship, several cooperative product programmes will no longer proceed. We are currently re-scoping those product programmes.”

Ford was working on 3 projects – a mid-sized SUV based on XUV500, a sub-4 meter SUV (Venue/Sonet Rival) and a new compact SUV (Hyundai Creta Rival). The new compact SUVs are planned to be launched by 2023-24. The two compact SUVs are now developed by Ford Motor Company, and are likely to be delayed by 6 months.

These SUVs was planned to be equipped with Mahindra’s engines; however, Ford will need to find another supplier or invest in upgrading its own engines. The existing Ford EcoSport will receive a facelift model towards the end of this year. It is reportedly to be offered with existing 1.5L petrol and diesel engines.

Previous reports claim that Ford’s two compact SUVs will be based on the modified version of the existing Fiesta’s platform, which underpins the Figo twins and the EcoSport. The platform is compatible to accommodate different body styles and engines.

Ford is also exploring importing some of its global cars including Mustang Mach E under the 2,500 units rule. Government of India has allowed automakers to import 2,500 vehicles without going through local homologation process. Ford will also launch the Territory SUV in India by the end of this year. This SUV will rival the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan and the Citroen C5 Aircross.
