The Indian automobile industry still managed to perform better during the second nationwide lockdown in comparison to the same month last year. There was a year-on-year growth of 182 percent. Talking about the sales figures, a total 1,03,170 passenger vehicles were sold last month against 6,576 units of May 2020. What comes as a surprise the Hyundai Creta became India’s first non Maruti Suzuki model to top the sales chart. The mid-size SUV dethroned Maruti Suzuki Swift from the first position to become India’s top-selling car in May 2021.
The South Korean carmaker sold 7,527 units of the second-generation Creta as opposed to 3,212 units of May 2020. It registered YoY growth of 134.3 percent. The Maruti Swift hatchback recorded total sales of 7,005 units against 597 units of the same month last year. Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon emerged as India’s second and third top selling SUVs with sales of 6,627 units and 6,439 units respectively.
Maruti Suzuki managed to sell 5,819 units of the Dzire compact sedan and 4,803 units of the Baleno hatchback. While the Dzire stood at number fifth, the premium hatchback grabbed the seventh spot. The Hyundai Venue was the 4th best selling SUV and the sixth top selling car in the country. The Kia Seltos and Mahindra Bolero clocked total sales of 4,277 units and 3,517 units and secured the eighth and tenth spots respectively. Hyundai’s i10 Grand Nios premium hatchback registered sales of 3,804 units against 718 units of May 2020.
