Toyota Kirloskar Motor currently has two utility vehicles in its product portfolio – Fortuner and Innova Crysta. Both models are dominating their respective segments. In coming years, the company is likely to expand its SUV and MPV range with 6 new models including two products developed under Suzuki-Toyota partnership. The lineup might also include Toyota RAV4 hybrid and Toyota C-HR crossover, which were caught testing multiple times in the country. If launched, both SUVs will be brought under the government’s rule that allows a carmaker import 2,500 vehicles without any homologation process.
The Toyota RAV4 hybrid SUV and Toyota C-HR crossover have been designed on the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. The same architecture underpins the Camry and Prius. While the RAVA hybrid is likely to come with a 218bhp, 2.5L Atkinson cycle petrol motor and a strong hybrid system. The motor, mounted on the rear axles, helps distributing power to all four wheels. It provides up to 80% of torque to the rear wheels.
Globally, the Toyota C-HR is offered with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder petrol engine paired to an e-CVT gearbox. The engine makes a top power of 144bhp and 188Nm of torque that delivered to the front wheels. In India, the crossover might be made available with a 1.8L petrol engine paired to an electric motor. Under its partnership with Suzuki, Toyota will introduce a mid-size SUV and a crossover (codenamed – DD22). Both models will be based on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) and produced at the carmaker Bangaluru based facility.
The Japanese carmaker is working on a C-segment MPV that will be developed jointly with Suzuki. The model will be based on the monocoque platform and come with 7-seats configuration. In the MPV segment, Toyota will also bring in the re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The re-badged model will witness a few noticeable cosmetic changes and feature upgrades. The engine setup, however, will remain unchanged.
