It is now very common to see turbocharged petrol engines with mass market and everyday compact vehicles. These engines were earlier reserved for performance oriented cars. Hyundai has also introduced a new 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which now powers a wide range of its entry-level compact cars in the market.
The new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo engine is available in two states of tunes – 99bhp/172Nm and a 118bhp/172Nm. This engine is offered with 4 gearbox options – a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed DCT (Dual-Clutch Automatic) and a 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual transmission).
The new-generation Hyundai i20, Verna facelift and the Venue compact SUV are equipped with a more powerful 118bhp, 1.0-litre petrol engine with 7-speed DCT as common gearbox options. While the Verna facelift is offered with DCT gearbox option, the new Venue is offered with 3 gearbox options – a 6-speed MT, a 7-speed DCT and a 6-speed iMT.
The newly-launched Hyundai i20 is also offered with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 118bhp and 172Nm. For transmission, the new i20 turbo gets a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT automatic. The iMT is basically a clutchless manual transmission, which offers convenience of 2-pedal clutch-less technology and “fun-to-drive elements” of a manual gearbox. The iMT system has an ‘intention sensor’ that works with the gear lever and notifies a transmission control unit (TCU) when the driver changes gears. The TCU unit transmits signals to a hydraulic actuator to employ and lay off the clutch plate while gear shifting.
Hyundai’s entry-level cars including the Grand i10 Nios and the Aura are equipped with the de-tuned version of the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which offers 99bhp and 172Nm of torque. This engine is available with a single 5-speed manual gearbox option.
