5-door Mahindra Thar & Maruti Jimny To Debut At Auto Expo 2023

Mahindra had launched the new-gen Mahindra Thar lifestyle SUV in 2020. The SUV has received an overwhelming response from buyers, as it commands a waiting period of over 12 months. MSIL had showcased the 3-door Jimny at the 2020 Auto Expo; however, it has not been launched in our market. Both automakers have announced to launch a more practical and bigger 5-door versions of the Jimny and the Thar in our market in 2023.

Mahindra has already started testing the new 5-door Thar on the Indian roads. On the other hand, Suzuki is testing the long-wheelbase 5-door version of the Jimny in Europe. The 5-door Jimny is rumoured to make global debut before the end of this year, while India debut is expected at the Auto Expo 2023. The 5-door Mahindra Thar will also make its debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in January.

The new 5-door model will ride on longer wheelbase compared to the 2-door model, which should help in offering more space inside the cabin. The current 3-door model has rear seats, but it is not a family car due to lack of space for adults and no luggage space. A five-door model would offer a combination of both – ruggedness and more space for rear occupants. The SUV is also likely to come with a metal hard top.

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be offered with the same 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines, which powers the 3-door Thar. The engines are likely to be calibrated for extra power and torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
