The 5-door Mahindra 5-door Thar, the upcoming off-road SUV from the home-grown carmaker, is all set to make its debut in 2023. While its official launch timeline is yet to be revealed, the model is reported to go on sale sometime in 2024. Here, it will be positioned against the upcoming 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny and 5-door Force Gurkha. Its prices are expected to be around Rs 70,000 – Rs 80,000 higher than its 3-door version that costs between Rs 13.59 lakh – Rs 16.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
Ahead of its official debut, we have its test mule multiple times revealing some of its design and interior details. Compared to its 3-door version, the new 5-door Thar will be a more practical option for family buyers. There will be extra cabin space for both rear seat passengers and in the boot area. With its rugged looks and 4X4 capabilities, it will appeal the off-road enthusiasts as well.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be around 15% longer and have 22% longer wheelbase than its younger sibling. The extended wheelbase will reduce its ‘breakover’ angle, while the width between the wheels could be increased to maintain an optimum wheelbase to track ratio for better stability. The off-road SUV’s existing model measures 3,985mm in length and sits on a 2,450mm long wheelbase.
Under the hood, the new 5-door Mahindra Thar will feature the same 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion petrol engines that power the 3-door Thar. Though, the carmaker might re-tune the motor for generating extra power output. It could be offered with 6 and 7-seats configuration options. The overall interior layout and features will be similar to the 3-door Thar, except the extra space in the second row. The spy images show that 5-door Thar will look exactly similar to its younger sibling. It will feature squarish LED taillamps, a tailgate mounted spare wheel and a high mounted stop lamp.
