MG Motor India has already revealed its plan to foray into the compact mass-market EV segment next year. In fact, the company has begun testing its upcoming compact electric car in the country. The model might make its public debut at the 2023 Auto Expo in January and its launch might happen by June. Internally known as E230, the new MG small EV will be based on the Wuling Air EV that made its debut in Indonesia earlier this year. The model, however, will receive a few market-specific changes.
Reports suggest that the British automaker is trying to get local fund around $300-$600 million and the deal is likely to close before the end of this fiscal year. With the new investment, the company aims to increase its production capacity and expand its product portfolio in India.
It plans to ramp up manufacturing capacity of its Halol, Gujarat-based plant to 3 lakh units in the coming years. As of now, MG Motor India is dealing with supply chain issues and problems related to import restrictions.
While the new MG small electric car will arrive early next year, the company will give mid-life updates to its two SUVs – Hector and Gloster. The 2022 MG Hector, which is currently in its testing phase, is likely to come with a few design and feature updates. One of the major updates might come in the form of ADAS (advanced drive assistance system) as we have seen in the Gloster. The suite includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, hands free parking and lane departure warning.
The new 2022 MG Gloster facelift might also witness subtle cosmetic changes along with a bunch of new features. The SUV has already been packed with lots of advanced goodies. Engine setup is likely to be carried forward from the current model.
