The proper off-road SUVs are quite popular among enthusiasts. In coming years, we will witness launches of three new off-road SUVs including the 5-door Mahindra Thar, Maruti Jimny LWB (long-wheelbase) and new-generation Force Gurkha. Here’s a brief on the upcoming three off-roaders.
New-Gen Force Gurkha
2021 Force Gurkha was recently revealed in leaked images on the web. The SUV carries new rugged design elements, while retaining the original retro-styled stance. The new Gurkha underpins a new chassis and has a new bodyshell complying to the existing crash test norms. The new-generation version comes with the more upmarket interior packed with a touchscreen infotainment system, revised dashboard and centre console and many more goodies. Powering the new Gurkha will be the BS6-compliant version of the existing diesel engine paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It gets the 4X4 drivetrain system with manual locking differentials. The off-road SUV is likely to launch near around 2021 festive season.
Maruti Jimny LWB
Reports suggest that the Indo-Japanese carmaker is planning to launch the LWB (long wheelbase) version of the Jimny off-road SUV in the country. The model, which is currently in its testing phase, is expected to hit roads towards the end of 2021 or early 2022. Globally, the 5-door Jimny will be made available with the 1.4L, 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine sourced from the Suzuki Swift Sport. The motor will be paired to a mild hybrid system that will surely enhance its fuel efficiency. In India, the 2022 Maruti Jimny 5-door is likely to be offered with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine making power worth 101bhp and 130Nm of torque. The gasoline unit makes a top power of 101bhp against 130Nm of torque.
5-Door Mahindra Thar
Mahindra & Mahindra has begun testing the 5-door Thar in the country. Recently, its prototype was caught testing with Bolero’s body. Compared to the existing model, the new Thar 5-door will be bigger featuring slightly different design elements. The model is likely to be built on longer wheelbase and provide more cabin space. On the engine front, the Mahindra Thar 5-door is likely to offer the 2.0L turbo petrol (152bhp/300) and 2.2L turbo diesel (132bhp/300Nm) motors borrowed from the existing model. All variants might come with the 4X4 system and a manual shift transfer case with a low ratio. While there is no official word on its launch timeline, it’s expected to arrive sometime next year.
