2024 Swift’s New Z-Series Engine Explained – High On Mileage

Suzuki Motor Corporation has taken the spotlight at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show with a preview of its upcoming models. Among the reveals, the eVX concept, now in a refined form, made its debut, but the true showstopper was the introduction of Suzuki’s new Z-Series engine in the next-generation Swift hatchback. Codenamed Z12, this new engine is a naturally aspirated 1.2L 3-cylinder unit, poised to replace the current 1.2L 4-cylinder K-Series motor. So, what sets Suzuki’s Z-Series engine apart? Let’s delve into the details.

Lightweight and Greener

The most striking feature of the Swift’s Z-Series engine is its 3-cylinder configuration, replacing the previous 4-cylinder setup, resulting in a lighter engine. This change not only reduces weight but also allows the engine to meet the stringent BS6 emission standards and CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) Phase 2 regulations. It’s important to note that the 2024 Suzuki Swift showcased at the event features a hybrid powertrain. In India, however, the new Swift model will come equipped with a conventional petrol engine.

High On Mileage

The Z-Series engine in the new Swift is expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor, although specific technical details have yet to be disclosed by the automaker. Speculations suggest that the power output of the new petrol engine will be similar to the outgoing 1.2L 4-cylinder motor, but its torque output will be higher, thanks to an increased cylinder volume (400cc per cylinder). Earlier reports hinted that the Swift with a hybrid powertrain could achieve an impressive fuel efficiency ranging from 35kmpl to 40kmpl.

Potential for Other Models

While the company has not officially disclosed its plans for the new engine, there is anticipation that the Z-Series engine may find its way into existing models currently equipped with the K12 motor, such as the Ignis, Baleno, and Fronx. It is possible that the engine could be offered with different capacities to cater to a wider range of vehicles.
