2023 Tata Harrier, Safari Launch Details – New Turbo-Petrol Engine

Tata Motors is ready to update its three popular SUVs, namely, Nexon, Harrier and Safari. While the Nexon facelift is reported to arrive by August, the heavily updated Harrier and Safari are reported to hit showrooms during 2023 Diwali season (i.e. by October). All three models are currently in their testing phase and caught on camera multiple times. The 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari will come with significantly improved design and more features along with the rumoured turbo-petrol engine.

New Turbo-Petrol Engine

There are talks that the both SUVs could be offered with Tata’s new 1.5L, 4-cylinder turbo petrol motor that was showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo. The new gasoline unit complies with the BS6 Phase II emission norms and can run on E20 (a 20 percent petrol-ethanol) fuel blend. The unit, which has stiffer aluminium built, is claimed to deliver better performance and fuel efficiency. It has dual cam phasing, a variable oil pump, an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head and a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger.

The new turbo-petrol engine is also said to have lower cost of ownership, thanks to their new valve trains and timing chains. The direct injection motor pushes out a maximum power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque at 2,000rpm-3,500rpm. Reports suggest that Tata will use its new 1.5L TGDi engine for the upcoming Curvv and Sierra SUVs, which will go on sale by 2024 and 2025 respectively. The new 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari facelifts will also be available with the existing 2.0L turbo diesel engine that’s good enough for 170bhp and 350Nm. The SUVs can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Expected Design Changes

The updated Harrier and Safari will feature a new front grille with vertical slats and split headlamp setup connected via a LED light bar. The front bumper will be different from the existing model. What will further give them a refreshing look could be the newly-designed alloy wheels and revised taillamps connected with an LED light bar.

The new 2023 Tata Harrier and Safari facelifts will come with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system sourced from Harman. The display will have better graphics, new functionality and an updated interface. The unit will support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The SUVs will also get a new 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Though, the major upgrade will be the ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) offering features such as forward collision alert, autonomous emergency braking, lane change assist, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition.
