Tata Motors has revealed two new turbocharged petrol engines at the 2023 Auto Expo. The new engines will power the upcoming and existing cars and SUVs. These new turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDi) engines come in engine capacity of 1.2L and 1.5L. Both engines are compliant with the upcoming Bharat Stage 6, phase, and also compatible with E20 Fuel (mix of 20% ethanol & 80% petrol).
Built on the all-aluminium structure, the new direct injection engines come with dual cam phasing, variable oil pump, integrated exhaust manifold in cylinder head for improved performance without compromising on fuel economy. The water cooled variable geometry turbocharger is claimed to offer better torque delivery.
1.2L Turbo Petrol Engine
The new 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is capable of producing 125PS of power at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 225Nm between 1700-3500rpm. It is expected to be offered with a 6-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox options.
The new 1.2L turbo petrol engine will power the production version of the Tata Curvv, which is scheduled to be launched sometime in early 2024. The new model will also receive an electric version. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and others in its category.
1.5L Turbo Petrol Engine
Finally, Tata Motors will have a 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in the country. This 1498cc turbo engine is claimed to offer 170PS of power at 5,000rpm and a peak torque of 280Nm between 2000-3500rpm. It will be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options.
The new turbo petrol engine will power the Harrier and the Safari facelifts, which are scheduled to be launched sometime in 2023. Moreover, this engine will also power the Sierra lifestyle SUV which will be launched in 2024-25.
