Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced new variants of its popular Thar SUV along with a new powertrain option. The model lineup receives a new 1.5L diesel engine that makes it a beneficiary of the GST offered on the sub-4 meter vehicles. It’s the same oil burner that does duty in the Marazzo MPV. The motor, that comes paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, pushes out a peak power of 117bhp and 300Nm of torque. What’s more interesting is the 2023 Mahindra Thar gets RWD (2WD – two-wheel drive) system with the new 1.5L diesel engine and the existing 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol unit. The turbo-petrol RWD variant comes with a 6-speed torque convertor automatic variant only. Besides this, the carmaker has offered two new colour schemes – Everest White and Blazing Bronze. The new 2023 Mahindra Thar 1.5L diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol 4×2 variants have been priced at Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 13.49 lakh respectively. All aforementioned prices are ex-showroom.

In terms of features, the new 2023 Mahindra Thar 4X2/RWD variants offers electrically adjustable ORVMs, a touchscreen infotainment system, roof-mounted speakers, cruise control, electronic stability program (ESP). On the exterior, the SUV features sporty black front and rear bumpers, moulded footsteps, fog lamp clusters, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.
In other updates, the home-grown SUV marker is planning to bring the long-wheelbase (LWB) version of the Mahindra Thar. Reports suggest that the model might debut on 26th January, followed by its launch in the second half of 2023. For power, the SUV will use the same 2.0L petrol and 2.2L diesel engine options. Compared to the 3-door version, the new 5-door Mahindra Thar is expected to be priced around Rs 1 lakh premium. Once launched, it will go up against the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny and 5-door Force Gurkha.
