2022 has been a profitable year for Mahindra & Mahindra. The carmaker received the highest ever bookings, thanks to mega launches including the new Scorpio-N, Scorpio Classic and XUV300 Turbosport. SUVs like updated Mahindra Thar and XUV700 are also generating volume for the carmaker in the country. However, the Mahindra SUVs are currently observing highest ever waiting period due to semiconductor shortage.
In order to reduce waiting period of SUVs, the company is running its manufacturing at full capacity. In Q4 2022, Mahindra’s monthly SUV production capacity stands at 29,000. The carmaker aims to increase it to 39,000 and 49,000/per month by the end of 2023 and 2024 respectively. That means, the production capacity will be ramped up by 10,000 in every 12 months. Furthermore, the company is working on to create an alternative chip supplier.
The new Mahindra Scorpio-N was the major product launch from the home-grown automaker this year. The SUV model lineup comes with 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L diesel engines and both manual and automatic gearbox options. While the petrol unit makes 203bhp with 370Nm (MT) and 380Nm (AT), the diesel motor offers 132bhp with 300Nm (in lower variants) and 175bhp with 370Nm MT/400Nm AT (in higher trims). The diesel version offers three drive modes – Zip, Zap and Zoom.
In August 2022, the company rolled out the Mahindra Scorpio Classic in S and S11 variants. Powering the SUV is a 2.2L turbo, Gen 2 mHawk diesel engine making 132bhp and 300Nm. It has a 6-speed manual gearbox delivering power to the rear wheels. The SUV is claimed to return 14 percent improved fuel economy. In October 2022, Mahindra launched the new XUV300 TurboSport with a new 1.2L T-GDi turbo petrol engine. The new gasoline unit is exclusively offered on the three trims – W6, W8 and W8 (O).
