Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to launch the second-generation Thar off-road SUV on October 2, 2020. The carmaker has already confirmed that the new-generation Mahindra XUV500 (W601) and Scorpio (Z101) will the next two models to be rolled out from the company’s stable.
Mahindra is planning to sell the current-generation XUV500 and Scorpio alongside the new models “due to their sustained popularity”. With this decision, the carmaker will address a wide set of customers. The 2021 Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio will take a big leap in terms of design, features and performance.
The 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will be the first one to hit roads. The SUV will carry a more squarish design with an upright nose and flatter door panels. Upfront, there will be the signature grille along with the slightly smaller headlamps and vertically placed DRLs as we have seen in the XUV300. The higher trims might be exclusively offered with LED headlamps and DRLs. Read – Mahindra-Ford To Jointly Develop 3 New SUVs in India
The conventional ‘cheetah claw’ door handles will be replaced with flush-fitting units. Interior will also witness comprehensive changes including the Funster-inspired dashboard, a new, fully digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system and several other comfort goodies.
The biggest update will come in the form of the Mahindra’s newly-developed 2.0L petrol engine boosted with turbocharger and direct injection technology. The motor will deliver a healthy 190bhp against 380Nm of torque. The BS6-compliant, 180bhp, 2.2L diesel engine will also be on offer. The SUV can be had either with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
The next-generation Mahindra Scorpio will arrive sometime in the second quarter of 2021 (i.e. around April-June). Based on the updated ladder-frame chassis, the new model will have upright silhouette with strong character lines running along the sides. It’s likely to appear more rugged and refreshing than the current generation.
Some of its features will be carried over from the Marazzo MPV including gear knob, steering wheel, instrument cluster and control stalks. For power, the 2021 Mahindra Scorpio will use a new G20 2.0L petrol engine generating power close to 190bhp and a 140bhp, 2.2L diesel motor. Both automatic and manual gearboxes will be on offer.
