Mahindra & Mahindra has announced that the second-generation Thar has received over 20,000 bookings in just one month of its arrival in the market. Due to high demand, the off-road SUV has been observing a waiting period of up to 7 months. The carmaker says that the overwhelming response has surpassed their expectations and production capacities. The company had planned to produce around 2,000 units on monthly basis. The new Mahindra Thar 2020 is being offered in three trim levels – AX, AX(O) and LX – and with two engine and gearbox options. While the diesel model uses a 2.2-litre mHawk motor making 130bhp and 300Nm of torque. The new 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol dishes out a peak power of 150bhp and 300Nm (MT) and 320Nm (AT). Both engines are available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. A 4×4 drivetrain with a low-range transfer case is standard across the range.
Mahindra has packed the 2020 Thar with several new features including a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a colour multi-info display for the instrument cluster, steering-mounted controls and cruise control, roof-mounted speakers and more. Features such as better approach, departure and ramp over angles, high ground clearance, improved water wading depth, all-terrain tyres enhance its off-road capabilities. With respect to safety, the new Thar provides dual airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability program with roll over mitigation, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and hill-start and descent assist. The SUV’s new model also meets the upcoming pedestrian protection standards. The new Mahindra Thar 2020 comes in 6 colour options, namely, Rocky Beige, Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Aquamarine, Galaxy Grey and Napoli Black. The paint schemes vary variant-wise.
