2 New Micro SUVs Ready For Launch – Maruti Fronx Fighters

The micro SUV or compact crossover segment, which is currently ruled by Tata Punch, is getting hotter with the arrival of new models. Maruti Suzuki recently introduced the Baleno hatchback based Fronx within the price range of Rs 7.46 lakh – Rs 13.13 lakh (all, ex-showroom). Car manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor will also foray into this space in the next 3-4 months. While the Hyundai’s Exter will enter into production in July and go on sale in August, Toyota will bring in the re-badged version of the Maruti Fronx. Here’re some key details of the upcoming new micro SUVs.

Hyundai’s new Exter mini SUV will share its platform, powertrain and features with the Grand i10 Nios hatchback. That means, the model might feature a 1.2L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine under the hood. The motor makes a top power of 83bhp and 114Nm of torque. Both manual and AMT gearboxes will be on offer. The carmaker might also introduce it with the 1.0L T-GDi turbo petrol engine making 120bhp and 175Nm. The Hyundai Exter is likely to borrow some of its design elements from the Venue and Creta SUVs. Though, it will measure around 3.8 meters in length. On the feature front, the Exter might get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with the latest smartphone connectivity, a single-pane electric sunroof, Hyundai’s BlueLink connected car tech, a semi-digital instrument cluster, etc. More details here…

Toyota’s re-badged version of the Fronx could be named – Toyota Raize or Taisor. Measuring around 4 meters in length, the micro SUV is expected to take its design inspiration from the Toyota Yaris Cross that’s sold in select global market. Under the hood, the micro SUV will feature the same 1.0L Boosterjet turbo petrol and 1.2L Dualjet petrol engines. Both motors will have Suzuki’s mild hybrid technology. While the Boosterjet unit makes a top power of 100bhp with 147.6Nm of torque, the naturally aspirated gasoline motor delivers 90bhp with 113Nm. There will be three gearboxes on offer – a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed torque convertor automatic and a 5-speed AMT. Its interior layout and features are likely to be similar to the Fronx.
