Electric Vehicle (EV) sales has grown up in the past couple of years. According to industry estimates, nearly 10 lakh EVs were sold in 2022. The domestic electric car market is likely to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 49 percent between 2022-23. With this expansion, we will witness multiple new EV launches across segments from car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Renault. Here’re some key details of the upcoming two major EVs, which are slated to go on sale this year.
MG Comet
MG Comet will be the first electric offering from the British automaker in India. The model, which is based on the Indonesia-spec Wuling Air EV, will hit our roads in April 2023. It will be a three-door, four-seater compact EV built on the electric skateboard architecture. The Comet has a 2010mm long wheelbase and carries boxy stance. Official specifications of the new MG EV are yet to be revealed. Though, it’s expected to come with a battery of around 20kWh – 25kWh, sourced from Tata AutoComp. It will have an electric motor fitted at the front axle and deliver power worth 68bhp. The small electric car will deliver a range of up to 300km on a single charge. More details here…
Tata Punch EV
Tata Punch EV will come around 2023 festive season. Interestingly, it will be the brand’s first model to be based on the new Sigma architecture that’s essentially a heavily modified version of the Alfa platform. The mini SUV might share its powertrain with Tata’s existing EVs, with a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Similar to the Nexon EV, the Punch electric could be made available with multiple battery pack options.
