Tata Motors recently launched the new Safari 6/7-seater SUV at an introductory price of Rs 14.69 lakh (ex-showroom). The carmaker’s new flagship SUV is based on the Harrier, but carries bigger dimensions and premium design and interior than its younger sibling.

As mentioned above, prices of the 2021 Tata Safari start from Rs 14.69 lakh for the entry-level variant and its top-spec model costs Rs 21.45 lakh. Compared to the Harrier, it’s up to Rs 1 lakh more expensive. All are introductory, ex-showroom. The current generation Mahindra XUV500 is available in the price range of Rs 13.83 lakh – Rs 19.56 lakh (ex-showroom). There are a total of 7 variants spread across four trims – W5, W7, W9, W11 and W11 (O).

Under the hood, the 2021 Tata Safari is the same engine that does duty in the Harrier – i.e. 2.0L turbo Kryotec diesel unit. The oil burner pushes out a maximum power of 170bhp at 3,750rpm and 350Nm of torque between Rs 1,750rpm and 2,500rpm. Similar to the Harrier, the bigger SUV comes with 6-speed manual and torque convertor automatic gearbox options. Power is transmitted to wheels via front-wheel-drive system.

At present, the Mahindra XUV500 comes with a 2.2L turbo diesel motor that’s good enough for 155bhp and 320Nm of torque. The SUV can be had with both manual and automatic gearboxes. While the current generation XUV500 is less powerful than the new Safari, the upcoming 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will be more powerful and it will come with both petrol and diesel engine options.

In terms of proportions, the 2021 Tata Safari measures 4661mm in length, 1894mm in width and 1786mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2741mm and carries a kerb weight of 1825kgs. The SUV offers a fuel tank capacity of 50-litres. It has been assembled with 18-inch alloy wheels and 235/60 front and rear tyres along with a 16-inch, 235/70 spare tyre.

The overall length, width and height of the Mahindra XUV500 stand at 4585mm, 1890mm and 1785mm respectively. It sits on a 2700mm long wheelbase. Compared to its arch rival (XUV500), the new Safari is slightly longer, wider and taller.

The 2021 Tata Safari is surely a more feature-packed product than the existing XUV500. However, Mahindra’s new-generation XUV500 will debut with several segment-first features including ADAS, Mercedes-like touchscreens, 3D eyelid mechanism and many more. Tata’s new 6/7-seater SUV offers features such as a floating, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, JBL audio system with 9-speakers and external amplifier, a 7-inch coloured TFT display for instrument cluster, iRA (Intelligent Real Time Assist) connected car technology and many more.

The Mahindra XUV500, on the other side, has been equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, tan coloured seats with diamond stitching, twin-pod instrument console, leather wrapped steering and dashboard with silver trim, electronic stability control, Hill start and descent control, dynamic steering control, a sunroof, larger cooled under-arm storage space, conversation mirror, tyre tropics, etc.
