MG Hector With New Grille, Alloys Spotted – Is It Diesel Automatic?

Recently, the MG Hector SUV was spotted near the carmaker’s Halol-based plant in Vadodara. The spotted model features a new front grille and larger, dual-tone 17-inch alloy wheels. As of now, there is no clarity whether it’s updated model or the diesel-automatic variant of the SUV. If launched, the MG Hector diesel automatic variant will be put up directly against the Tata Harrier. The latter comes with 168bhp, 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It’s likely to be offered on the higher Smart and Sharp trims. The Hector diesel automatic variants are expected to be priced around Rs 1 lakh premium over their manual counterpart.

At present, the diesel manual Smart and Sharp variants are available at Rs 16.49 lakh and Rs 17.88 lakh respectively. The Sharp diesel dual-tone variant costs Rs 18.08 lakh. Powering the diesel model is a FCA-sourced 2.0L motor that pushes out a peak power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. The petrol variant comes with a 1.5L turbocharged unit making 143bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both engines get a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. The turbo-petrol is exclusively offered with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In addition, there is a 48V mild-hybrid petrol motor with a 6-speed manual gearbox only.

The petrol-hybrid powertrain is relatively more fuel efficient than the standard petrol motor. The mild-hybrid system provides up to 20Nm extra torque at low speeds to improve acceleration and counter turbo lag. The MG Hector petrol delivers a claimed mileage of 13.96kmpl (DCT) and 14.61kmpl (manual). While the diesel model returns a claimed fuel economy of 17.41kmpl, the petrol-hybrid powertrain offers 15.81kmpl.
