Upcoming MG Cars and SUVs in India in 2020, 2021

Morris Garages, the British automaker owned by Chinese SAIC Motor Corporation entered India with the Hector SUV in 2019. This SUV has received excellent response from buyers. The company is currently selling 3 models – Hector, Hector Plus and the ZS electric SUV. MG Motors is now planning to enter into new segments to expand its product portfolio. Here is a list of upcoming MG Cars and SUVs that will be launched in the Indian market in the next couple of years.

Upcoming MG Cars

MG ZS Petrol

MG ZS Petrol India

The first model in our list of upcoming MG cars is the petrol version of the ZS SUV, which was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. The MG ZS petrol will be positioned below the Hector SUV and will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Nissan Kicks. The new model looks similar to the ZS EV; except for few tweaks including the new grille. Dimensionally, the new MG ZS SUV is 4,314mm long, 1,809mm wide and 1,611mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,585mm. The SUV has a boot space of 448-litres, which can be further extended up to 1,375-litres by folding rear seats.

In the international markets, the MG ZS petrol is available in 2 engine options – a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol. While the former is good for 104bhp and 141Nm of torque, the turbocharged unit produces 109bhp and 160Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

MG Small SUV

MG Compact SUV

Next in our list of upcoming MG cars is an all-new sub-4 meter SUV, which will be launched in our market in the 2021-22 The details about the upcoming small SUV are yet to be revealed. It will directly rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and the upcoming Kia Sonet. It is expected that the new sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the Baojun 510 SUV, which has been spotted testing multiple times in India. Measuring 4.10 meter in length, the 510 was recently replaced with the RS-3 in the Chinese market. For the Indian market, MG Motors is likely to trim the length of the Baojun 510 to achieve the sub-4 meter length. The compact SUV is likely to be offered with petrol and diesel fuel options.

MG G10 MPV

MG G10 MPV India

MG Motors had showcased the full-size G10 premium MPV at the 2020 Auto Expo. This MPV will be launched in our market to rival the likes of the Kia Carnival and the Toyota Innova Crysta. It is basically the re-badged Maxus G10 MPV, which is on sale in the Chinese market. In terms of proportions, the upcoming MPV is 5,618mm long, 1,980mm wide and 1,928m tall, and has a wheelbase of 3,210mm. The new model is 53mm longer and 173mm taller than the Kia Carnival. In fact, the wheelbase is 150mm longer than the Korean rival.

In terms of pricing, the new MG G10 MPV is likely to be positioned right between the Innova Crysta and the Carnival. The MG G10 MPV is expected to be powered by the 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, which will also power the upcoming Gloster SUV. This engine is based on the Fiat’s 2.0-litre MJD II turbocharged diesel Powertrain. It is capable of producing of 218bhp of power and 480Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

MG 360M

MG 360M MPV

MG had also showcased an all-new 7-seater mid-sized MPV, called the MG 360M at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is expected that MG Motors is seriously considering launching this MPV in India. The MPV will be positioned against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Mahindra Marazzo. It is basically the re-badged Baojun 360, which is currently on sale in the Chinese market. The MPV will receive comprehensive changes before launching in the Indian market.

In terms of proportions, the MG 360M is 4,615mm long, 1,735mm wide and 1,660mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,750mm. With second and third row seats folded down, the 360M offers a luggage carrying capacity of 1,350-litres. It is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired to a CVT automatic gearbox. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power output of 103PS and a peak torque of 135Nm.

MG Hector Facelift

MG Motors is all set to give a mild makeover to its popular SUV, the Hector. In fact, the Hector facelift has already been caught testing near the carmaker’s Halol-based plant in Vadodra, Gujarat. It features a new front grille and larger, dual-tone 17-inch alloy wheels. It is also expected that the updated model will also receive a diesel automatic option, which will be positioned against the Tata Harrier Diesel AT. The Hector is available with 2 engine options – a 2.0L turbo-diesel and a 1.5L turbo petrol. While the former is good for 170bhp and 350Nm of torque, the gasoline unit produces 143bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both engines get a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. The turbo-petrol is exclusively offered with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In addition, there is a 48V mild-hybrid petrol motor with a 6-speed manual gearbox only
