Next-Gen Toyota Land Cruiser rendering

It was speculated that the next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser will make global debut in August 2020. However, the launch is now reportedly scheduled around June 2021. The company hasn’t revealed much-about the launch timeline of the next Land Cruiser. We believe that the COVID19 pandemic could be the reason behind delay in the launch of the SUV.

If media reports are to be believed, the next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser will receive a hybrid powertrain. The hybrid system comprises of a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine and an electric motor. The combined power output is 295bhp of power and 356Nm of torque. The SUV will also receive a new 10-speed automatic gearbox, which will replace the current 8-speed automatic gearbox. The hybrid powertrain will replace the 4.6L V8 engine currently powers the Euro-spec model. This engine produces 313bhp and 460Nm. The American model is powered by a 5.7-litre V8 engine that produces 381bhp and 544Nm.

The upcoming new Cruiser will receive a new diesel engine, which is likely to be a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel unit.  It is expected that the replacement for the Land Cruiser 200 will be available with an upgraded version of the 2.8L D-4D diesel engine. This engine currently powers the Hilux and Fortuner, mated to all 4 wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Also See – MG Gloster Vs Toyota Fortuner

While powering the Hilux and Fortuner, the 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces up to 175bhp and 450Nm of torque. However, Toyota will have to make significant changes to the engine to meet the need of heavier Land Cruiser.

The next-gen Toyota Land Cruiser will be underpinned by the company’s new TNGA modular platform, which also underpins the Prius and the C-HR. However, the SUV will retain the ladder-on-frame chassis. The TNGA platform will help the Japanese automaker to significantly reduce the overall weight of the big-sized SUV.

According to the Japanese media, the next Toyota Land Cruiser will measure around 4950mm in length, 1980mm in width, and 1870mm in height. The report further claims that the exterior design will remain in-line with the current model; however, it will have bolder front end similar to the Toyota’s modern line-up
