In terms of features, MG Motors’ claims that the new Gloster sits above the D-segment SUVs including the Fortuner and the Endeavour. However, the SUV has been priced very aggressively. The new Gloster is available in 5 variants and priced between Rs 28.98 lakh and Rs 35.38 lakh (ex-showroom, Gurgaon).
The Fortuner SUV is available in the price bracket of Rs 28.18 lakh – Rs 33.95 lakh. The 4×2 manual and automatic petrol variants are priced at Rs 28.18 lakh and Rs 29.77 lakh respectively. There are four diesel variants 4X2 manual, 4X2 automatic, 4X4 manual and 4X4 automatic are priced at Rs 30.19 lakh, Rs 32.05 lakh, Rs 32.16 lakh and Rs 33.95 lakh respectively. The MG Gloster is the biggest SUV in its category. In fact, the SUV is as large as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep Cherokee. The SUV measures 4,985mm in length, 1,926mm in width and 1,867mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2950mm.
In terms of proportions, the Toyota Fortuner SUV is 4,795mm long, 1,855mm wide and 1,835mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,745mm. The Gloster is 190mm longer, 71mm wider and 32mm taller than the Fortuner. In fact, the wheelbase is 20mm longer than the segment-leader.
Specifications
The new Gloster is available with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel and a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. While the former is good for 163PS of power and 375Nm of torque, the twin-turbocharged engine produces 218PS of power and 480Nm of torque. Both powertrains are coupled to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Gloster with 163bhp, 2.0L engine comes with 2WD system, the 2.0L twin-turbo unit gets 4WD drivetrain. The Gloster’s all terrain system offers 7 driving modes including – SNOW, SAND, ECO, MUD, AUTO, ROCK and SPORT.
The Toyota Fortuner is available with 2 BS6 compliant engines – a 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder petrol and a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. While the former is capable of producing 163bhp of power and 245Nm of torque, the oil burner is good for 174bhp and 420Nm. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
Fortuner Vs Gloster Features
The Gloster SUV is claimed to offer segment-leading interior, which is designed with plush materials. In terms of features, the SUV gets an 8-inch multi-info instrument console, 3-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, iSmart connected car technology, leather upholstery and electrically adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions.
For passengers’ safety and security features, the MG Gloster gets six airbags, brake assist, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), Hill-hold control, Hill descent control, rear parking camera, front parking camera, tyre pressure monitoring system and a 360 degree camera.
The segment-leader Toyota Fortuner comes equipped with features like 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, engine start/stop button, cooled glove box, automatic climate control and multi-functional steering wheel. The SUV misses out on key features like electric sunroof and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. For passengers’ safety and security, the Fortuner gets seven airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, downhill assist control, hill assist control, etc.
