Volkswagen Group is planning to launch a range of new products in the Indian car market by 2020. The first model to go on sale will be a compact SUV in 2020. For people not in known, Skoda is working on a low-cost MQB platform for the growing markets including India. This platform will spawn VW and Skoda’s future products in India.
While Volkswagen will launch a compact SUV based on the T-Cross styling, Skoda is contemplating a compact SUV with design inspiration from Vision X concept. Both SUVs will be developed at the Volkswagen’s Chakan based plant. Skoda is working on a global compact SUV, which will borrow design cues from the Vision X concept. This model will be slotted below the Kodiaq and Karoq. However, the India-spec model will use the affordable version of the MQB platform.

In terms of proportions, the Vision X is 4,250mm, 1,50mm and 1,800mm in length, width and height respectively. The new model sits on a longer wheelbase of 2,645, which ensures spacious cabin for both front and rear occupants. Skoda is aiming to offer more rear space and feature loaded cabin in the India-spec model. The SUV is expected to feature the stripped down version of the existing 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The new Skoda SUV will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and upcoming Honda HRV.
