Why Citroen C3 Scored 0 Star Safety Rating in Latin NCAP?

In the latest Latin NCAP crash tests, the entry-level Citroen C3 hatchback manufactured in Brazil has achieved a disappointing zero-star safety rating. While the Brazil-spec model shares similarities with the India-spec C3 and is built on the same CMP platform, there are mechanical differences between the two. However, the French automaker has not disclosed whether both models have similar chassis structures or not.

Latin NCAP Scores

Let’s examine the scores obtained by the Citroen C3. It achieved 12.21 points in adult occupant safety, 5.93 points in child occupant safety, and 23.88 points in pedestrian safety. These scores account for 31%, 12%, and 50% of the total points, respectively. In terms of safety assist systems, the hatchback received 15 points, representing 35% of the total score.

Safety Features – Misses and Offers

Regarding safety features, the Made-in-Brazil Citroen C3 provides dual airbags for front occupants, seatbelts with load limiters, Isofix child seat mounts, electronic stability control, and seat belt reminders as standard equipment. However, the hatchback lacks seatbelt load limiters, AEB pedestrian, city and inter-urban systems, lane assist, speed assist system, and GTR-UN 127 pedestrian protection. Additionally, the C3’s body shell was rated as unstable in the frontal impact test.

What We Get In India-Spec Model?

On the other hand, the India-spec Citroen C3 offers dual airbags, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD, an engine immobilizer, child locks for rear doors, and a high-speed alert as standard features. The top-end Shine trim includes additional safety features such as a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability program, rear parking camera, speed-sensitive auto door locks, and hill hold assist.

The zero-star safety rating for the Citroen C3 in Brazil underscores the importance of prioritizing safety features and structural integrity in vehicles to ensure the protection of occupants and pedestrians.

Official Statement

Commenting on the Citroen C3 hatch’s cash test results, Stephan Brodziak, Latin NCAP Chairman said: “It is shameful that Stellantis, which knows how to develop safer cars at affordable prices, has designed a car with such poor safety as the Citroen C3. A car of this nature represents an offense to the health and integrity of Latin Americans, who are equally vulnerable in a crash or run-over situation as the inhabitants of those countries where Stellantis would never dare to sell a car with such low safety.

As Latin American consumers we strongly call on Stellantis to stop producing cars that are a risk both for their occupants and for other road users. Vehicle safety labeling, including Latin NCAP star rating, is a key tool to have safer cars in the region. We also call on the governments of each country to incorporate this tool as soon as possible for the benefit of the population and the economy”.
