Skoda has finally unveiled the long-awaited Kushaq mid-sized SUV, which is expected to be launched in April or May 2021. The Skoda Kushaq will mark the debut of Volkswagen Group’s locally developed MQB AO IN platform. As part of India 2.0, a total of 4 new MQB AO IN based Skoda and Volkswagen vehicles will be launched in the country.
Skoda Auto India is leading the VW Group’s India 2.0 Project, which comprises of developing platforms, technologies and cars locally. The company has officially announced to launch an SUV and an notchback for each brand (Skoda and Volkswagen). In order to achieve the high level of localisation in India, Skoda has set up a new MQB production line at its Pune plant. Most of the development is taking place at the new technology centre in Pune, which was opened in January 2019.
Besides Kushaq, Skoda will introduce a new notchback which will be positioned above the Rapid sedan. The new model will be longer and more spacious than the existing Rapid. The company could sell the new Notchback alongside the existing Rapid, as it is receiving good response from buyers. The new model will be positioned against the new Honda City and the Hyundai Verna.
Volkswagen will launch the Taigun mid-sized SUV and the Virtus based notchback based on the MQB AO IN platform. The VW Taigun was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo, and is scheduled to be launched during festive season before Diwali. The notchback is expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2021.
The new models will share the engine gearbox options, which includes a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol. The 1.0-litre engine is capable of producing 115PS of power and 175Nm of torque, while the 1.5-litre turbo unit produces 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox will come as standard. Other gearbox options include a 6-speed torque convertor automatic with 1.0L petrol and a 7-speed DSG automatic with 1.5L petrol.
