Volkswagen AG is planning to foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment in the Indian market. The company will introduce the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV in limited numbers sometime next year. The information comes from Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India. He revealed that the company will begin testing the VW ID.4 around September, 2022. The model will be tested for its technical capabilities and required adaptations for Indian weather conditions if needed.
The Volkswagen ID.4 SUV will come via CBU route under the government’s rule that allows to import 2,500 units without any homologation process. The German automaker might begin local assembly of its electric vehicles in India around 2025 or 2027. It’s also considering local manufacturing of its own batteries and expensive EV components in the country at the same time.

The ID.4 electric SUV is the production-ready version of the VW I.D.Crozz concept that made its India debut at the 2022 Auto Expo. The model features a blacked-out front grille, sleek LED headlamps with wraparound LED DRLs, a wide, central air dam and a light bar spanning the width of the nose. Some of its key design highlights include body cladding around the wheel arches and door sills, steeply raked A-pillars, blacked out roof and wing mirrors, 20-21-inch alloy wheels, flush door handles, sharply designed LED taillamps connected via a LED light bar and vertical tailgate.
Dimensionally, the new Volkswagen electric SUV measures 4584mm in length, 1852mm in width and 1612mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2766mm and offers a boot space of 543-litres. The Volkswagen ID4 has been designed on the MEB (modular electric drive matrix) platform. It ground clearance stands at 210mm.
Globally, the VW ID.4 is available in the single and dual motor variants. While the former has a 77kWh battery offering a range of 520km (WLTP cycle), the latter with AWD system promises a range of 480km. The single electric motor makes power worth 201bhp and 310Nm of torque and the dual motor version offers 295bhp.
