Japanese automaker, Toyota is preparing two brand new models – a mid-sized SUV & a C-segment MPV for the Indian market. Toyota and Suzuki joint venture is developing an all-new mid-sized SUV, which is scheduled to be launched during festive season 2022. Codenamed D22, the new mid-sized SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor.
There will be two versions of the SUV will be introduced. Maruti Suzuki’s version, codenamed YFG will have different design and interior; however, both models will have common underpinnings and powertrain options. D22 is part of Toyota’s plan to completely revamp its portfolio. The report claims that the company will launch half a dozen new models in the next 2 years.
Before the new mid-sized SUV, Toyota will launch the new Glanza facelift and the new Urban Cruiser. The company will also launch the re-badged versions of the Ciaz and the Ertiga; however, official launch details are yet to be revealed. Suzuki is also working on a new Baleno based crossover, and Toyota could also launch the re-badged version of the crossover in the country.
The Japanese automaker is also working on a new C-segment MPV, Codenamed 560B which is scheduled to be launched in 2023. The new MPV and the mid-sized SUV are likely to be based on the Toyota’s DNGA platform that also underpins the Raize and the new Avanza. The new models will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The new model will be positioned against the Kia Carens and the Mahindra Marazzo.
It is reported that the new Toyota models will come with Toyota’s hybrid technology. The alliance believe that the hybrid powertrain equipped model will account for a third of its production. It will offer an electric motor with the internal combustion engine. Toyota will also now start producing vehicles for exports. The JV is planning to produce 45,000 units of the D22 and YFS SUV in the next financial year – between April 2022 to March 2023.
