Toyota Sales Continues To Grow; Beats Kia, Honda, MG

September 2023 proved to be a positive month for the Indian automotive industry, with the sale of nearly 3.62 lakh passenger vehicles, marking over a 2 percent growth compared to the same month last year. As the festive season approaches, these numbers are expected to rise further, driven by new product launches and upcoming models. Hyundai Motor India also saw a year-on-year growth of 9.1 percent, with sales reaching 54,241 units, up from 49,700 units in September 2022. Tata Motors and Mahindra secured the third and fourth positions with sales of 44,810 units and 41,267 units, respectively.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) continued its strong performance, maintaining the fourth position and achieving its highest-ever monthly sales of 22,168 units. The company attributed this success to sustained demand across its product range, along with its reputation for reliability and a robust service network. With the introduction of new models like the Innova Hycross and re-badged Maruti Suzuki vehicles, Toyota recorded a remarkable year-on-year sales growth of over 44 percent. Currently, Toyota holds a 6.1 percent share of the total market, surpassing Kia India, Honda Cars India, and MG Motor India in terms of sales.

Following the introduction of the Toyota Rumion (a re-badged Maruti Ertiga), Toyota Kirloskar Motor is gearing up to launch a micro SUV based on the Maruti Fronx, expected to debut in October 2023. The recent trademarking of the ‘Toyota Taisor’ nameplate suggests it will be used for this upcoming re-badged Fronx. Additionally, Toyota has plans to introduce a range of new SUVs, including a three-row SUV based on the Corolla Cross, a mid-size SUV codenamed Toyota 340D, and the next-generation Fortuner.

In line with market trends, Toyota is preparing to enter the electric vehicle (EV) segment through collaboration with Maruti Suzuki. Reports indicate that the Japanese automaker will launch a re-badged version of the upcoming Maruti eVX electric SUV. These strategic moves underscore Toyota’s commitment to expanding its presence and offerings in the Indian automotive market.
