Toyota has confirmed that it is developing an all-new subcompact car for the European markets. The new model could be the new generation Aygo. The new Toyota subcompact car will be based on the TNGA-B modular platform, which also underpins the new Yaris.
It is expected that the new subcompact car could receive a different name instead of the new generation Aygo. Toyota claims that the new subcompact car will have a combustion engine to “help keep it accessible to consumers”. On the other hand, rival brands are turning their vehicles to electric such as the Fiat 500 and the Volkswagen Up!. It is expected that Toyota could introduce the electric version of the car at a later stage.
The new subcompact SUV will be the Toyota’s entry-level model in the European markets. The company is also working on the Yaris Cross, which is the SUV version of the regular hatchback. With the new Aygo, Toyota’s line-up based on the TNGA-B platform will increase to 3 models. Toyota aims to produce close to 5 lakh cars on this platform, which will create economies of scale and helping the segment A subcompact to be an accessible model.
The spy images confirm that the new Aygo will maintain its hatchback shape. It was speculated that the new model will have a more minivan-type look. The spotted model looks wider than the existing car.
The new subcompact car was spotted in production body, which suggests that it could be launched by the end of this year or early 2022. The new subcompact car will only be launched in the European markets.
