It is no secret that Toyota and Maruti are jointly working on new mid-sized SUVs for the Indian market. The two SUVs have been spotted testing for the first time on the outskirts of Gurugram. Codenamed the Maruti YFG and the Toyota D22, the new SUVs will be launched in the country before the end of 2022.

The spotted SUVs were heavily camouflaged, but the spy images confirm that both models will have distinct styling. Both models have different front design; however, the overall profile are same. The SUVs share styling cues from the new Toyota SUV range, which includes the Corolla Cross and the RAV4.

The Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV features a split-headlamp set-up, featuring twin LED DRLs (daytime running lamps). The LED DRls sits above the main headlamps. There could be a thick chrome strip to connect the LED DRLs, which is similar to the one offered on the Camry and the soon-to-be-launched Glanza hatchback. The front bumper accommodates a large air-dam with honeycomb mesh design.

The Maruti YFG comes with a different front design, which seems inspired by the Toyota RAV4-based A-Cross SUV on sale in European markets. The SUV also gets split headlamp set-up with A-Cross inspired LED DRLs positioned on top. The front grille design also has similarities with the new Baleno and the upcoming Ertiga facelift.

Both SUVs feature squared-off wheel arches and sits high with expected ground clearance of over 200mm. The SUV rides on large 17-inch chunky wheels. The Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV features steel wheels, while the Maruti YFG rides on alloys.

The new mid-sized SUVs are likely to be based on Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform that underpins the Raize and the new Avanza. The new models will be jointly developed by Toyota and Suzuki at Toyota’s Bidadi plant.  It is reported that the new SUVs will be manufactured on the same production line that produces the recently discontinued Yaris sedan.
