Toyota-Daihatsu’s Suzuki Jimny Rival Could Be Called Daihatsu Rugger

We reported earlier that Toyota-Daihatsu is working on an all-new mini off-roader, which is likely to make global debut in December 2021. The new model will directly rival the new Suzuki Jimny, which has been a huge hit globally. The Daihatsu will join the brand’s new active light SUV, the Taft and the Rocky sub-4 meter SUV.

The Daihatsu Rugger is reportedly to be based on the DNGA (Daihatsu’s New Generation Architecture) platform, which also underpins the Rocky and the Toyota Raize. The use of monocoque chassis will improve the onroad performance of the SUV; however, this could impact the off-road capabilities.

The mini off-roader will be fitted with 4WD system, which is Rocky’s “Dynamic Control 4WD.” The company could also offer an electronically controlled 4WD system. The SUV will have more sturdy and rugged looks with muscular wheel arches and larger diameter tires.

The Daihatsu Rugger will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that also powers the Daihatsu Rocky and the Toyota Raize. This engine churns out a maximum power output of 98bhp and a peak torque of 140Nm. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

Maruti Suzuki is planning to introduce the 5-door Jimny SUV in India by 2022. On the other hand, Toyota is set to introduce the DNGA platform based mid-sized SUV in the Indian market. This mid-sized SUV will rival the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta.
