Toyota-Daihatsu To Launch An Off-road SUV (Suzuki Jimny Rival) In Dec 2021

A new media report claims that Toyota’s low-cost car brand, Daihatsu will launch an off-road SUV that will compete against the new Suzuki Jimny. This will join the brand’s new active light SUV, the Daihatsu Taft, which competes against the new Suzuki Hustler. The company is also selling the Daihatsu Rocky sub-4 meter SUV.

The upcoming mini off-roader is expected to offer a more sturdy and rugged looks. The report claims that the upcoming model will be based on the Daihatsu’s new generation platform DNGA. This platform will help in improving the on-road comfort.

The sub-4 meter SUV will also receive 4WD system, which is Rocky’s “Dynamic Control 4WD”. The company could also offer an electronically controlled 4WD system. The exterior will have squared design that is common to the Taft. The SUV will have muscular wheel arches and larger diameter tires.

If reports are to be believed, the new SUV could be called the Daihatsu Lager. The new model is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that also powers the Daihatsu Rocky and the Toyota Raize. This engine is capable of producing 98bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic.

Toyota is also planning to bring the DNGA platform in India. This platform will be used to develop a new mid-sized SUV, which will be positioned against the Kia Seltos and the Hyundai Creta. Adding to it, the brand is also developing a new compact MPV to be positioned below the Innova Crysta.
