In the past one year, the mid-sized SUV segment has witnessed multiple launches including the VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor. The segment will further crowded in near future, as Tata Motors, Honda and other brands are planning to launch new mid-sized SUVs. Here is a list of top 6 new mid-sized SUVs will be launched in the Indian market in the next few years –

Tata Blackbird

Tata Motors is preparing a new mid-sized Coupe SUV, codenamed Tata Blackbird. The new model will be based on the X1 platform that underpins the Nexon compact SUV. It will share the front profile and some body panels with the Nexon; however, the model will have longer body and tapering roof to give it a coupe profile. The new model will be first introduced as an Electric vehicle, which is likely to get a 40KWH battery. This powertrain is expected to offer a range of over 400km, which will make it a direct rival to the MG ZS EV.

The Tata Blackbird regular model will be powered by a newly developed 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which can produce up to 160bhp. This engine will be first introduced in the Safari and the Harrier. The diesel version will get the 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that powers the Nexon.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota joint venture is preparing a new mid-sized SUV to rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor. The new model will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant. It is likely to be based on Toyota’s DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform that underpins the Raize and the Avanza. The new model is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine. It could also get a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Hyundai Creta Facelift

The Korean automaker, Hyundai will launch the Creta facelift before the end of 2022. Similar to the new-gen Tucson, the updated Creta follows Hyundai’s new Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy. It gets a new parametric jewel pattern grille that integrates LED DRLs, new rectangular LED headlamps, updated bumper with slimmer air inlet, a silver coloured faux skid plate and new fog lamp assembly.

The SUV could come with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), new digital driver’s display, BlueLink connected car tech and a 360 degree camera. The SUV will retain the existing engine options – a 113bhp, 1.5L NA petrol, a 113bhp, 1.5L turbo-diesel and a 138bhp, 1.4L turbo petrol.

Honda ZR-V/Elevate

Japanese automaker, Honda is preparing a new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. It is rumoured to be called the ZR-V or the Elevate, as the former name is already trademarked in India. The new model will be based on the Amaze platform that underpins the new BR-V in Indonesia. In fact, Honda had showcased the RS SUV Concept at the 2021 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. It is expected that the production version of the SUV will share the engine options with the global-spec City sedan. The Honda ZR-V is expected to be offered with the 1.5L petrol and 1.5L petrol with Honda’s e:HEV mild hybrid technology.

Mahindra XUV500

Mahindra has recently replaced the XUV500 with an all-new XUV700 that is offered in 5-and 7-seat options. The company has also announced to revive the XUV500 nameplate; however, it will be significantly smaller than the previous model. The new XUV500 will measure around 4.3 meters in length, which will make it a rival to the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and others in its category. The new model will be based on the modified version of the XUV300 platform. It is likely to be powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engine options. The company could also launch the electrified version of the XUV500.

Citroen is preparing to launch multiple new models including the C3 subcompact car and a mid-sized SUV. The company is also working on a new mid-sized SUV, project CC24, which is likely to be launched in 2023. This SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and others in its segment. The Citroen CC24 will be based on the new CMP platform, which will underpin the C3. The new model is likely to share the styling cues from the C4 Cactus, which is on sale in the International markets. The new model is likely to be powered by a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine.
