Tata Blackbird SUV (Creta Rival) Launch Timeline & Engine Details

Tata Motors is preparing an all-new mid-sized SUV, which will be positioned between the Nexon and the Harrier. The new model will measure around 4.3 meters in length. Codenamed Tata Blackbird, the new mid-sized SUV is reportedly to be launched in the Indian market by 2023.

The Tata Blackbird will be a new mid-sized Coupe SUV. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq. What’s interesting is that the new model will be first introduced as an electric coupe SUV. To be positioned above the Nexon EV, the new electrified SUV will rival the MG ZS EV.

The new Tata Blackbird electric coupe SUV will be based on the Nexon’s X1 platform. The platform will be modified to accommodate a longer wheelbase and a bigger model. It is expected that the wheelbase will be increased by up to 50mm. Not just the platform, the new model will share the body styles with the Nexon.

The SUV’s front half including the A-Pillar, windscreen and front doors will be shared with the Nexon. The maximum changes will be made post the B-pillar, as it will have longer rear doors, tapering roof and all-new rear end with a large overhang. It is likely to offer more rear seat legroom and bigger boot.

Tata Blackbird Coupe SUV Engine Options

The Tata Blackbord coupe SUV is likely to be equipped with a larger 40kWh battery pack. It should offer a range over 400kms. The new model will be eligible for the tax benefits offered on all electric vehicles, a flat 5 percent GST.

The new mid-sized SUV will also receive a newly developed 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which is currently under development. This engine will first debut in the existing Tata Safari and the Harrier. It is expected to produce up to 160bhp of power. The diesel version of the Coupe SUV will receive the 110bhp, 1.5L engine that powers the Nexon. This engine will be tuned to meet the tougher emission norms in 2023.
