Tata’s New 2.2L Diesel Engine In the Works – For Harrier & Safari?

According to a fresh media report, Tata Motors is working on a more powerful 2.2L diesel engine meeting BS6 emission standards. The new oil burner will be boosted with Lean NOx Traps (LNT) that helps control NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emissions from lean burn motors. The unit will also feature Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that traps particulate matter from the diesel engine and store exhaust soot to reduce emission levels. It will have AdBlue – a non-toxic diesel exhaust fluid, to reduce NOx emissions.

The report further states that Tata’s new diesel engine will be used in the brand’s future SUVs. In fact, the new oil burner might come as a replacement for the Harrier and Safari’s existing 2.0L diesel motor that’s good enough for 168bhp and 350Nm. The company is reportedly working on a new 1.5 turbo petrol engine that’s essentially the more powerful version of the Nexon’s 1.2L gasoline unit. The new motor is likely to deliver power close to 160bhp and 250Nm of torque. It will be offered on the updater Harrier and Safari SUV model lineup with both manual and automatic gearbox options.

In other updates, the home-grown automaker has confirmed that it will roll out the Tiago electric hatchback in September 2022. While its specifications are still under the wraps, the model is expected to share its powertrain with the Tigor EV or Nexon EV. The Tata Tiago EV is likely to offer a range of 300km on a full charge. It will use Tata’s advanced Ziptron high-voltage architecture featuring a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

If reports are to be believed, Tata might bring in the Harrier electric SUV by mid 2023. At present, the model is in its Alpha testing phase. The automaker has also lined-up electric iterations of the Tata Altroz hatchback and Tata Punch mini SUV.
