Tata Safari Petrol Coming After the Dark Edition; Caught Testing

Tata Motors recently launched the Safari Dark Edition at a starting price of Rs 19.05 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV model lineup now includes six Dark Edition variants, which are up to Rs 72,000 more expensive than their standard counterparts. At present, the Tata Safari SUV is available with 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that’s good enough for 170bhp and 350Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.

Now, the company is planning further expand the Safari SUV model lineup with the new petrol variants. The Tata Safari petrol is likely to be powered by the brand’s new 1.5L turbocharged motor with manual (6-speed) and automatic (6-speed torque convertor and DCT) gearboxes. It’s essentially the more powerful version of the 1.2L turbo petrol unit that does duty in the Nexon. Tata’s new petrol engine is expected to offer a maximum power of 160bhp and torque close to 250Nm. The same powertrain will be used in the upcoming Tata Harrier petrol.

No other changes will be made to the Tata Safari petrol. Features such as panoramic sunroof, middle row captain seats, Oyster White leatherette upholstery, Xenon HID projector headlamps, fog lamps with cornering function, 9 speaker JBL audio system, an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, part-digital instrument cluster with 7.0-inch TFT display, 6-way electric adjust driver seat, hill decent control, electronic parking brake with auto hold and terrain response modes will be reserved for the higher trims.

The Safari Adventure Edition has been equipped with some exclusive features including 18-inch charcoal grey machined alloy wheels, charcoal grey skid plates, Safari badge on bonnet, piano black finish on grille, door handles and roof rails and earthy brown leatherette upholstery.
