Tata To Launch 1 New EV In Every 2 Years; No Plan For Hybrid

Upcoming Tata Electric Cars

Tata Motors had revealed its plan to launch 10 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2025. With an aim to setup a proper supply chain for zero-emission vehicles in coming years, the home-grown automaker will invest in lithium-ion battery manufacturing in India and Europe. Speaking to a media publication, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, said that the company will invest its resources and efforts towards BEV technology rather than hybrid tech.

Currently, Tata is leading the Indian electric car market with sales of over 21,900 units during the first half of this fiscal year. The carmaker will roll out a new electric car at least in every 2 years starting from 2025. Tata’s upcoming new EVs will be based on the three platforms including IC to EV conversion, Gen 2 (Sigma platform) and Gen 3 (Born Electric skateboard architecture).

Tata Avinya SUV

The first phase has three models, namely, Tiago EV, Tigor EV and Nexon EV sharing underpinning with heir ICE sibling. These models have a battery pack and an electric motor and promise a range of around 250km. The Gen 2 platform based electric cars will be designed on the heavily modified platform of their ICE versions including Altroz EV and Punch EV. The upcoming Tata Sierra EV will also fall in this category.

Tata’s Gen 3 architecture based models are claimed to offer range around 500km and have Tesla-like autonomous features. These will be pure electric vehicles designed and developed from ground-up. The production version of the Tata Avinya electric SUV concept will be the first model to underpin the Gen 3 platform. The company has already confirmed that the Tata Curvv and Avinya electric SUVs will hit roads in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
