Tata Sierra To Make A Comeback As An Electric SUV

Tata Motors has already announced to have 10 electric vehicles in the country in the next five years. The company is preparing a more powerful version of the Nexon electric vehicle, which will be joined by the Altroz EV. Tata Motors is also reportedly working on an all-new Nexon based mid-sized Coupe, which will be offered in electric as well as Internal Combustion Engine.

A new media report claims Tata Motors will re-introduce the iconic Sierra nameplate in the country. For people not in the know, Tata had showcased the concept version of the SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo. What’s interesting is that it will be Tata’s first stand-alonge EV-only model, and the first to be based on new ‘Born Electric’ platform.

Tata Sierra Concept (2)

The iconic Tata Sierra was the first true SUV from the homegrown passenger vehicle maker. It was equipped with a unique three-door design, featuring long unopenable rear windows. It was based on ladder-on-frame chassis and was powered by a 2.0L diesel engine with an optional 4WD system.

The upcoming Tata Sierra won’t be introduced with petrol and diesel engine options. It will be a born-electric product and will be developed as an EV. The production version of the Sierra Electric Vehicle will feature a conventional five-door layout.

The new Tata Sierra will be based on the dedicated Sigma platform, which is based on the ALFA platform. Tata engineers will have to heavily re-engineered the platform around the battery pack to optimise packaging. These modifications will include the deletion of the transmission tunnel, modification of the fuel tank area and the side members. The new Sigma platform will be lighter, more efficient and more spacious than the ICE platform-based EVs.

The report claims that the development of the Sierra has already been started; however, the launch won’t happen before 2025. Before Sierra, most of the Tata electric cars will be based on the existing ICE platforms.
