Tata Safari Vs Toyota Innova – Specs Comparison

Tata Motors has revealed the new-gen Safari SUV for the Indian market. Bookings for the SUV will commence from February 4; however, dealer-level bookings have already been commenced. The SUV is expected to be launched in the mid-February. It is basically the 6-and 7-seater version of the Harrier SUV. The SUV was first showcased as the Gravitas SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The new Safari is the second Tata product to be based on the OMEGA ARC platform, which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture. The SUV will rival the MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV500. New Tata Safari Vs Toyota Innova Prices

Prices of the new Safari is likely to be announced in February, 2021. The new model is expected to be priced around Rs 14 lakh to Rs 23 lakh, which will make it around 1-2 lakh expensive over the 5-seater Harrier. The SUV will be offered in 4 trim levels – XE, XM, XT and XZ – and in total of 9 variants.

The Innova Crysta is available in the price bracket of Rs 16.26 lakh and Rs 24.33 lakh (ex-showroom). While the petrol version costs between Rs 16.26 lakh and Rs 22.48 lakh, the diesel Crysta is priced between 16.64 lakh to Rs 24.33 lakh. The Crysta is expected to be around Rs 4-5 lakh expensive over the new Safari.

The new Safari is available in a single diesel engine option. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo Kryotec diesel engine, which is the same unit that powers the Harrier. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power output of 170bhp at 3,750rpm and a peak torque of 350Nm between 1,750rpm and 2,500rpm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. It is only available in front-wheel-drive system; however, Tata could launch the AWD system in future.

The Toyota Innova is available in two engine options – a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder petrol and a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder diesel. While the former is capable of producing 164bhp and 245Nm of torque, the oil burner is good for 148bhp and 343Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual unit or a six-speed automatic unit.

In terms of proportions, the new Safari is 4,661mm in length, 1,894mm in width and 1,786mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,741mm. On the other hand, the Crysta is 4,735mm long, 1,830mm wide and 1,795mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,750mm.

The Crysta is 74mm longer and 9mm taller than the Safari; however, the Safari 64mm wider than the Innova. The wheelbase of the Innova is just 9mm longer than that of the Tata’s 7-seater SUV.

The new Safari comes equipped with several high-end comfort and convenience features such as a floating 8.8 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, JBL audio system with 9 speakers and amplifier, a TFT display for instrument console, connected car technology, panoramic sunroof, 60:40 split, folding and recline second sow seats, 50:50 split folding third row, Leatherette upholstery, 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat and many more.

The SUV also gets high-end safety and security features such as 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, cornering stability control, off-road ABS, traction control, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), hill hold control, hill descent control, roll-over mitigation, dynamic wheel torque by brake, EDTC (Engine Drag Torque Control), EBP (Electronic Brake Pre-fill), HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and HFC (Hydraulic Fading Compensation).

The Innova Crysta offers decent features, but it misses out on some modern-day connectivity and convenience features. Some of the features include eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, easy-slid passenger seat,  Camel Tan perforated leather seats,  leather upholstery for steering and gear knob, automatic AC, cruise control, perforated leather seats and USB fast charging port. It also gets 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The MPV gets 3 airbags, ABS with EBD, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), HSA (Hill Start Assist), Seat-Belt Reminder, etc as standard.
