Tata Safari, Harrier SUVs To Get Turbo Petrol Engine

Tata Motors recently introduced its most expensive offering in the country – the new Safari. Available in 6 and 7-seats layout, the SUV is essentially the bigger and premium version of the Harrier. Both SUVs are currently available with a 2.0L Kyrotec turbocharged diesel engine that’s good enough for 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Based on the Omega architecture, the new Tata Safari and Harrier SUVs come with FWD (front-wheel-drive) system.

In coming months, the carmaker will introduce a newly-developed 1.6L turbocharged petrol engine on the Harrier SUV model lineup. The new gasoline motor is said to be more powerful and efficient than the MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) motors. In fact, its emission levels will also be lower. The new 1.6L turbo-petrol will be the brand’s first direct-injection engine that will deliver power close to 160bhp and torque around 250Nm. The same powertrain will also be offered on the new Tata Safari.

Rumour also has it that the Tata Harrier SUV might receive a 1.5L turbo petrol direct-injection petrol engine making power around 150bhp. There is no official word on its launch timeline and engine specifications as of now. Though, the Tata Harrier petrol has been spotted testing multiple times in the country.

The carmaker might also offer petro hybrid powertrain on Harrier at a later stage. With the hybrid system, the home-grown carmaker will be able to meet the upcoming CAFÉ II norms in 2022. Shailesh Chandra, President-PVBU, Tata Motors, has revealed that Tata’s entire portfolio might go electric in the future. The range will include the Altroz EV, HBX EV and Safari EV featuring the brand’s new Ziptron electric technology. More details on the upcoming Tata electric vehicles are likely to be revealed in near future.
