Tata Punch Vs Hyundai Exter – Sales Comparison August 2023

Since its debut in 2021, the Tata Punch has dominated the micro SUV segment in the country. Within 19 months of its launch, the indigenous automaker managed to sell 200,000 units, making it the second best-selling Tata vehicle after the Nexon. In August 2023, the Punch recorded total sales of 14,523 units, a significant increase compared to the 12,006 units sold in August 2022, resulting in an impressive 21 percent year-over-year growth.

To challenge its market dominance, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai introduced their Fronx and Exter micro SUVs in April and July, respectively. However, the Punch maintained a substantial lead over both competitors. While the Fronx registered sales of 12,164 units, the Exter only managed to retail 7,306 units last month. The price range of the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter is exactly the same (Rs 6 lakh – Rs 10 lakh), making them direct rivals.

Furthermore, the Tata Punch outperformed the Hyundai Creta, boasting a healthy sales margin of 691 units. The Creta, a mid-size SUV, recorded total sales of 13,832 units in August 2023, compared to 12,577 units in the same month the previous year.

In other updates, the Tata Punch is set to receive an electric powertrain, with its electric variant expected to launch before the end of 2023, potentially in November. Positioned as an affordable electric SUV, it will directly compete with models like the MG Comet and Citroen eC3. The Tata Punch EV will be equipped with Tata’s Ziptron powertrain, which typically consists of a permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a liquid-cooled battery.

While official specifications have not been released, it’s likely to share its powertrain with the Tiago EV. The Tiago EV offers two battery pack options: a 19.2kWh battery with a 74bhp electric motor and a 24kWh battery with a 61bhp electric motor. The Punch EV may also feature design elements inspired by the Curvv design philosophy, such as a new two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated logo in the center and haptic touch controls, aligning it with Tata’s modern design language.
