Tata Nano Might Return With Electric Powertrain – Report

With the implementation of the BS6 emission norms in April 2020, Tata Motors discontinued the Nano small car and Safari Storme SUV in the country. The Tata Nano, which was promoted as the cheapest car in the world, failed to generate volume for the carmaker in the country. The car went out of production line in May 2018. The small hatchback was offered with a 624cc, twin-cylinder petrol engine that was good for 38bhp and 51Nm. Power was delivered to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. According to a fresh media report, the home-grown automaker might evaluate to re-introduce the Tata Nano with an electric powertrain. The Tata Nano EV is likely to witness significant changes to its underpinning, suspension setup and tyres. The report further states that the carmaker might restart its talks with the Tamil Nadu government regarding acquisition of the Ford facility in Maraimalainagar, if the Tata Nano EV plan reaches to the production stage. One must note that there is no official word on the Tata Nano electric car.

Currently, the company sells three EVs in India – Tigor EV, Xpres-T and Nexon EV. Recently, Tata announced prices of the Tiago EV that start from Rs 8.49 lakh and go up to Rs 11.79 lakh. Deliveries of the electric hatchback will begin in January 2023. The Tata Tiago EV is being offered with two lithium-ion battery pack – 19.2kWh and 24kWh promising range of 250km and 315km (MIDC) respectively.

The electric hatch has Tata’s Ziptron high-voltage technology that consists of a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 61bhp/110Nm with smaller battery pack and 74bhp/114Nm with the larger battery pack. The Tiago EV comes with three charging options – 50kW DC fast charger (80% in 57 minutes), 7.2kW AC fast charger (2 hours 35 minutes – 19.2kWh and 3 hours 35 minutes – 24kWh) and 3.3kW home charger (100% in 5 hours 5 minutes – 19.2kWh battery/ 6 hours 20 minutes – 24kWh battery).
